About themThere are many famous astronomers who have contributed to what we know as astronomy today, like Galileo Galilei, William Herschel and Nicolous Copernicus.
Galileo Galilei- He had many great discoveries that ended in consequences for him but pathed a new way in Science and Astronomy. Galileo discovered that the moon had an uneven/mountinous surface, discovered the 4 largest satelites on Jupitor, the milky way was made up of stars, the oval shape of saturn, phases of venus and that the earth was not the centre of the Universe. All of these discoveries showed us more and more of the universe. The effect it had on us was that it created more theories about the earths place in the Universe, now leading us to believe the earth is not the centre of the Universe and it influenced more astronomers to continue his work. Galileo was the first person to join maths and physics together. The only problem of his discoveries was the consquences, he ended up being put under house arrest for the last eight years of his life. Claudius Ptlomy- This was the man who was the one who created the theory that the earth was in the center of the universe. For many years the church believed him because it was all they had known, but still his thoery wasn't correct and no one knew that. Although his theory wasn't correct it was still influential, because without this theory it wouldn't have led to Copernicus figuring out that the sun was actually the center of the universe. Ptlomy also wrote a book about his findings named Tetrabiblos Syntaxis which means 'four books'. In this book he wrote more baout astrology and providing more information on it. Ptlomy wrote the book in an organised manner making the book more logical. Some of his correct findings were the 300 new stars he had found, during his time and was the first to come up with the fisrt practical theory of retraction of light. Another one of his books was the "Almagast" showing the motions of the earth, moon and sun. |

Cluadius PtlomyClaudius Ptlomy was born in 90 AD and died in 168 AD.
He was the first to have a theory about earths position in the universe. |
Nicolaus Copernicus
Nicolaus was born on the 19th February 1473 and died on 24th May 1543.
He was the first to go against the church's theory about the earth being the center of the universe. |
